Old Fashioned Recipe: How to Make this Iconic Cocktail
Celebrate the weekend by learning how to make an old fashioned cocktail
May 7, 2021
Few drinks in the world of cocktails are as quick to satisfy as a classic old fashioned. This timeless drink, which is basically a less pretentious version of the Sazerac, has been served since the mid-1800s and is still popular today. To make it from scratch, you’ll simply need a dash of bitters, a bit of simple syrup, a shot of whiskey and an orange peel. If you follow that format, you can’t go wrong. The type of whiskey you use is up to you, so you do you.
If you’re a traditionalist, stick with rye whiskey. However, the bourbon old fashioned is a popular choice as well, and was the go-to style of whiskey for this iconic drink for a long time. Whichever whiskey you choose, the other sweet and fruity flavors added to the glass will complement it nicely. Just remember that “tasting” isn’t the same as “drinking” when it comes to a cocktail like this. Take your time and sip your old fashioned a little bit at a time (no shooting!) and savor the taste. In the case that you’ve never had an old fashioned before, you should start off with the classic old fashioned recipe below.
