FAQ

What are non-carbonated drinks?

Non-carbonated drinks are beverages that haven’t undergone the carbonation process. Carbonation infuses drinks with the bubbly mouthfeel and sparkling taste that we associate with soft drinks like Coca-Cola or Pepsi.

Non-carbonated drinks include fruit beverages like orange juice or watermelon punch, bottled water, iced tea, smoothies, coffee, and sports drinks.

What’s the difference between carbonated and non-carbonated drinks?

Carbonated beverages get their characteristic fizz from an infusion of carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is added during manufacturing and remains liquid under the pressure created during bottling. Once the bottle is opened and that pressure is relieved, the carbonic acid converts to carbon dioxide bubbles. That’s what tickles your nose when you drink it.

The amount of carbonic acid required depends on the other ingredients found in the beverage. The amounts change depending on whether you’re using cane sugar, corn syrup, or other sweeteners. It explains why Mexican Coke, which uses cane sugar, has a slightly different mouthfeel than American Coke, which is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.

Non-carbonated drinks don’t include carbonic acid, so they require less sugar or additional ingredients to make them palatable.

Are sparkling and carbonated the same?

Sparkling and carbonated are two ways of describing effervescent drinks. They both have bubbles, but they get them by two different processes. Carbonated beverages like soda get their bubbles from carbonic acid added during manufacturing.

Sparkling beverages like mineral water, champagne, or craft beer develop their characteristic fizz in two possible ways. In the case of sparkling mineral water, carbonation occurs naturally thanks to the chemical reaction of the water and the minerals in the rocks surrounding the source.

Wines and beers become carbonated as a byproduct of the fermentation process. Fermentation occurs when yeast is added to fruit juice or malt to convert sugar into alcohol. The side-effect of that chemical reaction is carbon dioxide. Vintners and distillers trap the gas and incorporate it into the final product for us to enjoy.
