The 5 Best At-Home COVID-19 Tests

Are you worried that you’re sick with COVID-19 or need to rule it out for a big event? Here are the best at-home COVID-19 tests Gopuff has to offer.

The lifting of mask mandates and COVID-19 restrictions doesn’t mean the chances of catching the virus are lower. If you feel sick, you’ll need a test to confirm the results. If you’re asking, “Which COVID-19 test is most accurate?” We can help you understand your options.

At the beginning of the pandemic, COVID-19 testing was only available at well-equipped facilities, sending test kits’ results to a lab for processing. Seeing the need for a quick fix, the FDA stepped in with their list of rapid antigen tests authorized for at-home use.

At-home COVID-19 tests are rapid antigen detection tests that determine your infection status. Once you have your results, your healthcare professional can help you decide if you need further care.

We’re happy to tell you that, yes, these at-home COVID-19 tests do work, and self-tests allow you to quickly reveal whether or not you have contracted COVID-19. If you get a positive result, you can isolate yourself immediately and protect others. At-home tests also free up healthcare resources for those in greater need.

You’ll find two types of COVID kits available for purchase: polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and antigen tests. If you need to take a test and are debating PCR vs. antigen tests, here’s a straightforward explanation of how both processes work so that you can make a decision:

  • PCR tests involve a nasal and throat swab to procure a saliva sample. They have a longer completion time and take longer to analyze in the lab, but they produce more accurate results.

  • Rapid antigen tests involve using a nasal swab to get your results. False positives or negatives are a greater risk with at-home antigen testing; this is especially true if you were only recently exposed to the virus and your viral load hasn’t reached a traceable amount.

During a surge of COVID-19 infections many people ask “Where can I buy a rapid COVID-19 test?” Especially as supplies dip. You can find at-home COVID-19 tests at doctor’s offices, pharmacies, and Gopuff

The FDA emergency use authorization (EUA) has given the general public more over-the-counter (OTC) testing options. Here are 5 of the best at-home COVID-19 tests available at Gopuff.

FAQs

How accurate are rapid COVID-19 tests?

Generally, quick and accurate. The accuracy depends on the type of test you’re taking (PCR or antigen tests) and how careful you’re with administering the test at home. They’re quite accurate when taken correctly.

Although many tests have achieved EUA, healthcare professionals have voiced concerns about contaminated test results in a potentially uncontrolled space. If you receive a negative result yet still have symptoms of COVID-19, you may have received a false-negative result. In this case, it’s best to test a second time or go to a professional testing location.

When should I take a COVID-19 home test?

Even if you’re vaccinated, you should take an at-home covid test if:

  • You’re displaying symptoms of COVID-19.

  • You came into close contact with a person who has a confirmed case of COVID-19 through positive results. Close contact is described as within 6 feet of another person for more than fifteen minutes at a time.

  • You work with a vulnerable population more susceptible to catching SARS-CoV-2 (for example, residents of a long-term care facility).

  • You’re traveling to or from an event with exposure to a large group of people.

What do you do if you test positive and need to self-isolate?

  • If you’re in school, make sure you have dorm room essentials to prepare for a potential period of isolation — especially if you have roommates.

  • If you’re at home and your case is mild (and you don’t need to visit the hospital), make sure you have enough cough, cold, and flu medications to help you manage your symptoms.

  • Do your part to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and wear a face mask.

  • Try to use separate cooking utensils and supplies from infected household members.
