It’s just about time for the sweetest, scariest night of the year — Halloween! Costumes are important and usually priority number one, but you can’t forget your candy. As you’re thinking about what treats to buy this year, we asked ourselves, what is the best candy to put in the trick-or-treat bowl? Is sweet better than sour? Will people be more likely to go crazy for chocolate? Read on to find out what Gopuff order data suggests will be the best items for your trick-or-treaters or Halloween party guests this year. Our findings might scare you.
When it comes to the type of candy people across the United States are purchasing, most people prefer chocolate over sweet or sour candy. Looking at Gopuff order data, the top indexed candies in almost every single state (86%) were chocolate and sweet candies (think Skittles), with sour candies the least popular.
The most popular of the chocolate treats? Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (yum!). With this in mind, we’d say that if you’re looking to pass out some crowd-pleasing candy this year, be sure to stock up on Reese’s.
While we love chocolate, we know it’s not for everyone. So, if you’re looking to round things out, consider Starburst and Sour Patch Kids, as both take the lead as the most popular candy in the sweet and sour candy categories, respectively.
Beyond the household, name-brand treats we all know and love, like Reese’s and Starburst, we’ve noticed some folks across the United States preferring smaller, hyper-local brands, like Enstrom Candies in Colorado, and healthier items like Raisinets in Alabama. If you want to serve up something extra special this Halloween and be sure to have something for everyone, below is a look at the most uniquely popular – and very specific – candy for each state (calculated by looking at state sales compared to the national average). Also, be sure to check out Gopuff’s Halloween candy deals: customers across the country can get up to 50% off some of their favorite treats like Brach’s Traditional Candy Corn, Mother’s Halloween Circus Animal Cookies, Nerds, Laffy Taffy, SweeTARTS, and more, in addition to chocolate and fruity candy variety packs.
