Thinking Globally & Acting Locally on Earth Day

From new paper bags to food donation programs, here are five sustainability facts you may not know about Gopuff

April 20, 2022

At Gopuff, we’re proud to be a global company that acts locally. Over the last few years, we’ve expanded our reach across two continents, four countries, and thousands of cities. But in every market where we operate, we prioritize connecting with and becoming members of the local community.

It’s with this local lens that we’ve also approached finding more environmentally sustainable practices to incorporate into our work. As a company driven by innovation, we are always working to make our practices even more efficient and environmentally sustainable – all without losing quality of service that our customers expect and deserve.

Our team has been hard at work researching and developing new ideas, as well as learning and sharing best practices between our American and European markets, to make the local operations of our global business even more sustainable.

This year for Earth Day, we want to share five sustainability facts you may not know about Gopuff.

Fact #1: Over the last year, we’ve donated over 502,500 pounds of food to local Feeding America® member food banks.

Since 2019, we’ve partnered with Feeding America® to donate hundreds of thousands of meals and dollars to local member food banks across the U.S. to help combat food insecurity.

In fact, our food donations have more than tripled year over year since 2019. From April 2021 to March 2022, Gopuff locations donated over 502,500 pounds of food to the Feeding America® network of food banks, which helped to provide over 418,800 meals to neighbors in need.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 38 million people, including nearly 12 million children, are food insecure. This is an important relationship for us as we share a commitment to support local communities, minimize food waste, and provide for people in need.

*According to the USDA, 1.2 lbs of food is equivalent to one meal.

Fact #2: In Europe, we’ve redirected 46 tons of food from waste and saved 115 tons of CO2e from being used needlessly.

In our European markets, 66 Gopuff locations are fully integrated with Too Good To Go, a platform which helps us sell “Magic Bags” of surplus food to customers at a reduced rate. Using Too Good To Go, we’re able to help ensure that even more food items are used for meals, rather than going to waste.

Since September 2021, these Gopuff locations in Europe have been able to redirect 46 tons of food from going to waste. That translates to over 45,800 meals! In addition, by redirecting this food from going to waste, we have also saved an estimated 115 tons of CO2e from being used needlessly.

We’re committed to expanding this great work as we grow our operations in Europe and the United States.

Fact #3: In six months, we’ve transitioned over 60% of Gopuff US locations to recyclable delivery bags.

In 2021, we made a major upgrade to our signature delivery bags by starting our transition to recyclable paper bags!

We first introduced these Gopuff paper bags last October, starting in New York City. Six months later, 62% of Gopuff locations across the United States have begun the transition to these more sustainable paper bags, and we’re on our way to full U.S. coverage!

In Europe, we are already at 100% usage of paper bags in all Gopuff locations.

Our paper delivery bags are made with recycled content and are fully recyclable curbside. We’re proud of this upgraded look to our delivery bags – and encourage you to reuse or recycle it once you get your delivery!

Fact #4: In eight months, we’ve rolled out bike deliveries in over 30 Gopuff locations in the U.S.

In some cities in which we operate, bicycles are a great option for making deliveries around town. They can be an easier and quicker mode of delivery and a great way to avoid traffic jams and parking issues. On top of that, bike deliveries also reduce carbon output and save delivery partners money on gas!

That’s why we’ve begun incorporating safe bike deliveries into our delivery services in select markets. Currently, bikes are used for deliveries from 32 Gopuff locations in cities including New York City, Chicago, Miami, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Since October, bikes have covered over 400,000 miles to make almost 300,000 orders!

Fact #5: In Central London, 100% of Gopuff delivery partner deliveries are made by electric bikes & mopeds.

We’re proud to serve a growing number of Londoners, offering a wide selection of thousands of items delivered right to their doors. We’re proud to say that 100% of deliveries by Gopuff delivery partners in Central London are made using electric vehicles like mopeds and e-bikes.

These vehicles not only make deliveries easier and quicker, but are also cutting emissions that would have come from driving gas-powered vehicles. Based on the success we’ve had in Central London, we are drawing lessons and applying them to our markets in Europe and the United States.

A Greener Future

We’re proud of the local impact these enhancements will have on our customers, our communities, and our business. Innovation will continue to drive us forward as we work to convert even more surplus food into meals, expand our multi-modality delivery capabilities to reduce carbon output, and equip every Gopuff location with recyclable paper delivery bags.
