National Beer Day is coming on April 7. In preparation for another beer-loved ‘holiday,’ Gopuff is here to help you celebrate. This year, Gopuff is hoppy to announce the top cities “Ale-ter Egos” in the U.S. Our data team dove into the most uniquely popular beers in cities across the nation to see what locals have been ordering over the past year. With this, we’ll be giving some of our top cities an “Ale-ter Ego,” and find out which city is a Sour Ale, which is a Pilsner, and more! Plus, we’ll find out who will be crowned the ‘Brew Master,’ based on which city ordered the most beer.

Austin, TX – American IPA
Austin has been granted the “Ale-ter Ego” of an American IPA. The American IPA is relatively new to the brew world, and it originated when U.S. brewers wanted to put their own spin on the British IPA. With New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA as one of Austin’s especially popular beers, this new twist on a more traditional IPA fits Austin perfectly.
Chicago, IL – Pilsner
Chicago’s most uniquely popular beer was Modelo Especial, a classic Mexican pilsner. Pilsners are a type of beer with a brewing process that is characterized by cooler temperatures… Sounds like the Windy City to us!
Dallas, TX – Fruit IPA
In the heat of the Texas sun, a fruity, refreshing beverage sounds like the perfect relief! So it’s no wonder that Hop Valley’s Mango & Stash IPA was one of Dallas’ especially popular beers.
Denver, CO – Imperial IPA
Denver has been given the ‘Ale-ter Ego” of an Imperial IPA. Denverite’s most uniquely popular beer was a local brew, New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA. The Imperial IPA is known for being a step up from the normal IPA; go on Denver, we see you.
Houston, TX – New England IPA
Though we can’t really explain it, Houston has been granted the “Ale-ter Ego” of New England IPA. One of Houston’s especially popular beers was Firestone Walker Brewing Co. Mind Haze, a New England IPA. This style of IPA is known for being smooth and—as the home of Beyoncé—Houston earned this one.
Lansing, MI – Summer Shandy
In the cold of Michigan, it seems like locals were often looking for a taste of summer. Among Lansing’s especially popular beers were Samuel Adams Summer Ale and Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy, both fruity and refreshing. We see you, Lansing. Summer’s coming. Stay strong.
Lexington, KY – Double IPA
Lexington has been granted the “Ale-ter Ego” of Double IPA. Double IPAs are known for having higher alcohol by volume (ABV) and being bold in flavor. Lexington’s top uniquely popular beer was Sierra Nevada’s Big Little Thing Double IPA… Drink responsibly, Lexingtonians!
Los Angeles, CA – Belgian White Ale
Among Los Angeles’ especially popular beers was an absolute classic: Blue Moon’s Belgian White. With this, Los Angeles has been dubbed a Belgian White Ale as their “Ale-ter Ego.”
Miami, FL – Sour Ale
Don’t take this the wrong way, Miami, we know you’re not sour! One of Miami’s especially popular beers was Collective Arts’ Guava Gose, a well-balanced Fruited Kettle Sour Ale: the perfect balance of tart, sweet, and sour.
New York City, NY – Amber Ale
New York City has been crowned as an Amber Ale, with their most uniquely popular beer being the New Belgium Fat Tire IPA. Amber Ales are known primarily for their color, and we’d say New York City is a pretty colorful place!
Philadelphia, PA – Juicy IPA
Philadelphian’s most uniquely popular beer was 2SP Brewing Company Up & Out IPA, a Juicy IPA filled with stone fruit, berry, and citrus notes. Sounds like Juicy IPA is a berry good “Ale-ter Ego” for Philly.
Phoenix, AZ – Scottish Ale
Phoenix locals seemed to have a taste for travel as Four Peaks Kilt Lifter Ale, a Scottish style Ale, was their most uniquely popular beer.
In the past year, Phoenix also ordered the most beer out of any other city, making them this year’s ‘Brew Master!’
Portland, OR – West Coast IPA
Portland has been dubbed the “Ale-ter Ego” of West Coast IPA. Staying true to their home, Firestone Walker Brewing Co. Union Jack, a West Coast IPA, was especially popular in Portland.
San Francisco, CA – Pale Ale
With the Sierra Nevada mountain range close by, it’s no wonder San Francisco locals made Sierra Nevada Pale Ale their most uniquely popular beer this past year. Plus, with San Francisco shrouded in fog so often, the ‘pale’ part of ‘pale ale’ makes perfect sense to us.
Seattle, WA – Hazy IPA
Seattle has been dubbed a Hazy IPA, with Elysian Brewing Company’s Contact Haze IPA and Space Dust IPA among their especially popular beers. Plus, with Seattle being known as the cloudiest city in the continental U.S, this “Ale-ter Ego” seems appropriate.
Washington, D.C. – Wheat Ale
Washington, D.C. is now Washington, W.A. for ‘Wheat Ale.’ D.C. Golden Road Brewing Mango Cart Wheat Ale, a light and crisp beer, was especially popular with locals. Known for being kind of a pain to brew, Wheat Ales are worth the attention, just like Washingtonians.
