Sapporo is the oldest brand of beer in Japan, founded in 1876. But our story starts much earlier. The legend of our beer began with our first brewmaster, Seibei Nakagawa. At the age of 17, Seibei left Japan to explore the world. He smuggled himself out of the country on a boat and traveled across Europe. In his travels, he learned the craft of brewing before returning home as the first German-trained brewmaster in Japan. To this day, his legacy and his pioneering spirit live on in every beer we brew. American beer lovers have enjoyed the crisp, perfectly balanced taste and superior drinkability of Sapporo Beer since we made our debut in the US in 1964.
